Following the Italian unification, more than a million Italians, most of them from southern and central Italy, peasants and men with traditional skills, leave for America.

American stereotypes of the Italians lead to their racist portrayal in the media and discrimination at work place. Labour unions, radical- and even anarchist groups spring from the communities, some of which coalesce during the Prohibition: a major turning point for the Italian workers and their rise to power in American society.
